6 days in Qingdao: coast, beer and a slower pace

A six-day Qingdao route for sea air, red roofs, beer and a city that is easier to like when you stop rushing between sights.

Qingdao works best as a pause. The old town, the coast and the beer are the headline, but the city’s real advantage is scale: you can walk a good part of it, eat well and still have an afternoon left.

Route at a glance

Qingdao (5 nights), one base.

  • Stay in the old town or around Badaguan.
  • Summer is busy; May–June and September–October are calmer.
  • This route has no long train legs. Use it as a break in a larger China trip.

Day 1: Old town and the pier

Arrive and check in around the old town. Walk to Zhanqiao Pier, look back at the red roofs, and take an easy dinner near the waterfront.

Keep the first evening local. Qingdao is a walking city when you stay in the right neighbourhood.

Day 2: Badaguan and the coast

  • Walk Badaguan’s quiet streets and the coastal path.
  • Stop at the beaches if the weather is good.
  • Visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum in the afternoon; book if you want the tasting.
  • Seafood dinner, ideally away from the most tourist-facing promenade.

Day 3: Mount Lao or a coastal village

Choose one: Mount Lao for a full day of walking and temples, or a slower coastal village and a long lunch. Do not try to do both.

Check transport and opening times the day before. Weather can change the plan on the coast.

Day 4: Churches, museums and coffee

  • St Michael’s Cathedral and the old German concession streets.
  • Qingdao Museum or the art museum, depending on the day.
  • Coffee and a book in the afternoon; Qingdao rewards a slow hour.

Day 5: Beach day and the market

Use the day for the beach, a seafood market, or a ferry ride. Buy seafood by weight and agree on the cooking price before it disappears into the kitchen.

Pack in the evening and keep the last dinner simple.

Day 6: Departure

Fly out or take a high-speed train to the next city. If you are continuing to Beijing or Shanghai, check 12306 for current schedules and leave a buffer at the station.

Where to stay

The old town is best for a first visit and walking. Badaguan is quieter and greener. The new city has larger hotels but less atmosphere; choose it only if you need the space.

Booking notes

  • Entry: check the current visa-free list before booking.
  • Trains: use 12306 for schedules; English ticket pickup still needs your passport.
  • Weather: the coast is cooler than inland China; pack a layer even in summer.
  • Beer: the museum is popular; go early or book ahead.
