Qingdao is the rare Chinese city that feels like a seaside holiday. The old town climbs a hill above the bay, the German concession left red-roofed villas, and the local beer is genuinely part of daily life.
Two or three days is plenty: old town, Badaguan, a beach afternoon and a brewery stop. It is a good summer escape from Beijing or Shanghai.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Clams. Stir-fried with chilli and garlic; a local staple.
- Seafood dumplings. Mackerel and prawn are the ones to order.
- Tsingtao beer. Drink it cold and local; the museum is optional.
Where to stay
- Old Town. Atmospheric, walkable and close to the sights.
- Badaguan. Quieter, leafy and near the beaches.
- May Fourth Square. Modern hotels and waterfront.
First-timer notes
- Visit the old town on foot; streets are steep and parking is a pain.
- Check the beach water quality before swimming; conditions vary.
- Book seafood restaurants with prices displayed to avoid bill surprises.
Honest skip list
- Skip the beer museum if you are short on time; the old town is better.
- Skip Qingdao in winter if you want the coastal experience.
