Dali and Lijiang are often sold together, but they reward different moods. Dali is slower and more spread out around Erhai Lake; Lijiang is more concentrated, more polished and more crowded, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on the horizon.
Four or five days lets you do both without rushing: two nights in Dali, two in Lijiang, with a driver or train between them.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Yunnan rice noodles. A regional staple, different from Kunming’s version.
- Naxi hotpot. Lijiang’s local specialty; rich and warming.
- Rushan cheese. Grilled Bai cheese; try it from a street stall.
Where to stay
- Dali old town. Atmospheric base for the lake.
- Shuanglang. Erhai Lake views and quieter nights.
- Lijiang old town. Central but crowded; stay on the edge.
First-timer notes
- Do not try to see both old towns in one day; the transfers are slow.
- Book Jade Dragon Snow Mountain tickets in advance; altitude sickness is real.
- Stay outside the busiest lanes of Lijiang old town if you want sleep.
Honest skip list
- Skip the staged “ancient” shows if you want real local life.
- Skip Erhai Lake on a rainy day; the views are the point.
