Chongqing is not a city you understand from a map. Roads stack over rooftops, a monorail runs through an apartment block, and the riverside skyline looks invented. It is also the fiery heart of Sichuan-style hotpot.
Two nights is enough for the greatest hits; add a day for the old town and a Yangtze River cruise if you want to slow down.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Chongqing hotpot. Beef tallow, extreme heat, no compromise. Order a mild pot if needed.
- Chongqing xiaomian. Breakfast noodles; mix before eating.
- Suanlafen. Cold jelly noodles, sour and chilli-heavy.
Where to stay
- Jiefangbei. Central, dense and close to Hongya Cave.
- Nan’an. Best skyline views; quieter nights.
- Guanyinqiao. Younger, cheaper, great food.
First-timer notes
- Use metro exits as landmarks; street-level navigation is unreliable in a vertical city.
- Do not schedule a tight transfer after a hotpot dinner; give yourself time.
- Carry your passport for hotel check-in and attraction bookings.
Honest skip list
- Skip the Yangtze cruise if you only have two nights; the port transfer eats a day.
- Skip the fake old-town shopping streets; Ciqikou is enough.
