Suzhou is a city of small, exact pleasures: a moon gate framing a rockery, a canal lane at dusk, a bowl of noodles with a spoonful of crab roe. The gardens are UNESCO-listed and best seen slowly.
It is an easy day trip from Shanghai, but a night here is worth it. The old town empties out after the tour buses leave.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Suzhou noodles. Clear broth, springy noodles, a topping of your choice.
- Squirrel fish. Sweet-and-sour showpiece; order for the table.
- Crab roe noodles. Autumn luxury; check the price before ordering.
Where to stay
- Pingjiang Road. Canal lanes and guesthouses; atmospheric but busy.
- Guanqian Street. Central, practical, close to gardens.
- Jinji Lake. Modern Suzhou; good for business hotels.
First-timer notes
- Reserve the Suzhou Museum and Humble Administrator’s Garden online before you arrive.
- Stay in the old town for one night; the day-trip crowd disappears by 5pm.
- Take the train from Shanghai rather than a bus; it is faster and more comfortable.
Honest skip list
- Skip a water-town day trip if you only have one night; the old town itself is the attraction.
- Skip the silk factory “museum” tours; they end in a salesroom.
