Chengdu has built an entire identity around not rushing. The pandas are the reason many people come, but the teahouses, the food and the leafy backstreets are why they stay longer than planned.
It is also a gateway to Sichuan’s bigger landscapes: Leshan’s giant Buddha, Mount Emei and the start of the western Sichuan loop. Three days in the city plus a day trip is a comfortable first visit.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Sichuan hotpot. Order a split pot if you cannot handle the numbing heat.
- Mapo tofu. The real thing is fragrant and numbing, not just spicy.
- Dan dan noodles. A cheap, perfect lunch.
Where to stay
- Chunxi Road. Central, busy and convenient for a first trip.
- Kuanzhai Alley. Restored lanes, touristy but pleasant.
- Wuhou. Quieter, close to the shrine and good local food.
First-timer notes
- Go to the panda base at opening and leave by 10:30; later is a crowd with sleeping pandas.
- Ask for mild spice (微辣) if you are not used to Sichuan pepper; it is a different kind of heat.
- Keep a packet of tissues; many local restaurants do not provide napkins.
Honest skip list
- Skip the panda-themed souvenir streets if you have already seen the real thing.
- Skip a day trip to both Leshan and Emei in one day; each deserves its own.
