5 days in Beijing: one city, no rush

A five-day Beijing route for a first China trip: the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, hutong mornings and enough slack for jet lag.

Five days in one city is not a compromise. Beijing rewards depth: the palace, the wall, the temple and the hutongs all need time, and the city is large enough that changing hotels would waste the trip. This route keeps one base and uses the mornings for the big sights.

Route at a glance

Beijing (4 nights), no intercity train.

  • Stay in Dongcheng or around Gulou.
  • Book the Forbidden City and the Great Wall transport before you fly.
  • Keep Day 1 light. Jet lag from Europe or North America is real.

Day 1: Land and stay local

Arrive at PEK or PKX, activate your eSIM, test Alipay, and take the airport express or a DiDi to the hotel. Stay in Dongcheng or Gulou.

Keep the evening small: a walk, a bowl of noodles, an early night. Do not book a show on arrival day.

Day 2: Forbidden City and the hutongs

  • Forbidden City at opening. Enter from the south (Meridian Gate), exit north. Book with your passport in advance; the palace is closed on Mondays.
  • Jingshan Park for the view over the palace roofs.
  • Lunch in the hutongs, then a slow walk from Gulou to Houhai.
  • Peking duck for dinner if you want the classic; book ahead.

Check the Palace Museum’s official notices before fixing the date. Opening days and timed-entry rules can change.

Day 3: The Great Wall at Mutianyu

Leave early and go to Mutianyu rather than the busiest sections. Walk one direction, take the cable car or toboggan if you want, and be back in the city by mid-afternoon.

Use the evening for a hutong walk or a low-key dinner. Do not add another major sight after the wall.

Day 4: Temple of Heaven and a slower Beijing

  • Temple of Heaven in the morning, when the park is full of local exercise groups.
  • Lunch near Qianmen or in the hutongs.
  • Lama Temple or 798 in the afternoon, depending on whether you want incense or galleries.
  • Keep the evening free for a neighbourhood you liked.

Day 5: Buffer and departure

Use the morning as a buffer: a last walk, a market, or a museum you missed. Take the airport express or a DiDi with enough time for security.

If your flight is late, leave your bag at the hotel and keep the day small. Beijing traffic is not the place to test a tight connection.

Where to stay

One base is the point of this route. Dongcheng puts the palace and hutongs within walking distance; Gulou is quieter at night; Sanlitun is convenient for restaurants but less atmospheric. Pick one and stay.

Booking notes

  • Forbidden City: passport, timed entry, closed Mondays; check the official site.
  • Great Wall: pre-book transport or use a licensed driver; check the return time before paying.
  • Payments: link a card to Alipay before arrival and keep a small cash backup.
  • Entry rules: check the current visa-free list before booking anything non-refundable.
