Kunming is not a bucket-list city, and that is its charm. The weather is mild year-round, the food is excellent and the city is a practical gateway to Dali, Lijiang and the rest of Yunnan.
Give it one or two days: the flower market, Green Lake, the provincial museum and a bowl of crossing-the-bridge noodles. Then move on.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Crossing-the-bridge noodles. A ritual bowl; add ingredients in order.
- Wild mushroom hotpot. Seasonal and serious; only eat at reputable places.
- Erkuai. Rice cakes, grilled or stir-fried.
Where to stay
- Green Lake. Central, leafy and walkable.
- Nanping. Shopping and food, close to the centre.
- Dianchi. Lake views and quieter hotels.
First-timer notes
- Use Kunming as a one-night gateway, not a destination in itself.
- Book Dali and Lijiang trains in advance during holidays.
- Be careful with wild mushrooms; only eat them cooked at reputable restaurants.
Honest skip list
- Skip the Stone Forest if you have seen dramatic karst elsewhere.
- Skip a long stay unless you are using it as a Yunnan base.
