Xi’an is where imperial China feels close enough to touch. The Terracotta Army is the headline, but the city wall, the Muslim Quarter and the Shaanxi History Museum make it more than a day trip from Beijing.
The old core is compact and flat. Two full days covers the essentials; three gives you time for the museums and a slower food crawl.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Roujiamo. Xi’an’s answer to a pulled-pork sandwich.
- Biangbiang noodles. Wide, chewy, chilli-oiled; the character is absurdly complex.
- Yangrou paomo. Lamb soup with torn bread; a full meal in a bowl.
Where to stay
- Bell Tower. Dead central and walkable to the wall and Muslim Quarter.
- South Gate. Quieter at night, close to the wall.
- Qujiang. Modern hotels and the pagoda area.
First-timer notes
- Book the Terracotta Army and Shaanxi History Museum in advance; walk-up tickets are unreliable.
- Stay inside or just outside the wall; the city is flat and easy to walk.
- Do the Muslim Quarter hungry but not starving; portions are large and choice is overwhelming.
Honest skip list
- Skip the Tang-dynasty dinner show if you want food, not spectacle.
- Skip Huaqing Palace unless you are a devoted Tang-history fan; it is a long detour.
