Guangzhou is a food city first and a sightseeing city second, which is exactly the right order. Dim sum here is a morning ritual, and the old Liwan district still feels like the city’s kitchen.
Two days covers the food, Shamian Island and the Canton Tower. It is also a useful stop for the Canton Fair or a onward train to Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Dim sum. Go before 11am; order too much, share everything.
- Roast goose. Crisp skin, rich meat; a Cantonese benchmark.
- Wonton noodles. A simple bowl that tells you a lot about the kitchen.
Where to stay
- Zhujiang New Town. Modern, central and close to the tower.
- Liwan. Old Guangzhou and the best food.
- Tianhe. Convenient for business and shopping.
First-timer notes
- Do dim sum as a late breakfast, not lunch; the best halls are busiest before noon.
- Stay near a metro line; the city is large and humid.
- Carry an umbrella; subtropical showers arrive fast.
Honest skip list
- Skip the Canton Tower observation deck on a hazy day; the view disappears.
- Skip the theme parks if you are here for food and culture.
