Zhangjiajie is a landscape-first destination. The Wulingyuan scenic area is a maze of shuttle buses, cable cars and viewing platforms; the trick is to pick two or three valleys rather than trying to see everything.
Three days is the sweet spot: one for Yuanjiajie and the Avatar viewpoints, one for Tianmen Mountain, one for a slower valley walk or the glass bridge.
What is actually worth your time
Editor’s shortlistEat this
- Sanxiaguo. A dry-pot stew; the local specialty.
- Smoked pork. Tujia-style, smoky and salty.
- Tujia sour soup. Tangy and warming after a wet hike.
Where to stay
- Wulingyuan. Best base for the national forest.
- Zhangjiajie city. Convenient for Tianmen and transport.
- Tianmen area. Close to the cable car; quieter nights.
First-timer notes
- Stay in Wulingyuan, not Zhangjiajie city, for the national forest.
- Buy tickets online and check which gate your route starts from; the park is enormous.
- Carry rain gear and snacks; weather changes fast and food inside the park is limited.
Honest skip list
- Skip the glass bridge if you are short on time; the national forest is the main event.
- Skip a guided “all highlights in one day” tour; it is mostly bus transfers.
